FAQs
-
Herbal medicine is the practice of using plants and plant-based preparations to support health and healing. It has been practiced worldwide for centuries, both in traditional cultures and modern medical contexts. At Camellia, I focus on Western Herbal Medicine (also known as Phytotherapy), which uses plant remedies from North American and European plants to support your body’s natural recovery processes and maintain overall well-being.
I also incorporate knowledge from Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to offer a broader perspective, ensuring that your care is as holistic and personalized as possible.
Herbal preparations can take many forms, including tinctures (alcohol-based extracts), teas, topical applications (salves and lotions), and capsules.
-
A Herbalist is someone trained in using plants to support health and healing. As a Certified Herbalist and Registered Herbal Therapist (RHT) with the BC Herbalist’s Association, I have completed advanced clinical training and certification, ensuring that I can offer you the highest quality care.
At Camellia, I blend traditional herbal wisdom with scientifically supported practices and evidence-based herbal medicine to provide holistic, effective care. Every recommendation is grounded in time-tested traditions and/or modern research.

While Herbalists, Naturopathic Doctors (NDs), and Homeopathic Practitioners all use natural remedies to support health, their training, approach, and focus areas differ significantly.
Herbalist
An Herbalist specializes in the use of plants for health and healing. Herbalists, like myself, are trained in Western Herbal Medicine, which focuses on the therapeutic uses of plants native to North America and Europe. Our approach is rooted in the traditional uses of plants, backed by clinical training, research, and evidence-based practices. Herbalists typically recommend plant-based remedies such as tinctures, teas, salves, and capsules tailored to an individual's specific health needs. Our focus is on holistic care, addressing the root causes of health issues and supporting the body’s natural healing processes through customized herbal formulas and lifestyle recommendations.
Naturopathic Doctor (ND)
A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is a licensed healthcare professional who has completed a four-year, post-graduate program at an accredited Naturopathic College. NDs are trained in both conventional medicine and natural therapies. They are legally recognized in several provinces and states and have the authority to diagnose and treat a wide range of health conditions. Naturopaths use a variety of natural treatments, including botanical medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling. They take a more integrative approach, often working alongside conventional medical treatments, and focus on preventative care and treating the underlying causes of disease.
Homeopathic Practitioner
A Homeopathic Practitioner specializes in homeopathy, a system of medicine that uses extremely diluted substances to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like cures like," meaning that a substance causing symptoms in a healthy person can be used in a highly diluted form to treat similar symptoms in a sick person. Homeopathic practitioners may use remedies derived from plants, minerals, and animal products, but these are highly diluted and prepared through a specific process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). Homeopathy is distinct from herbal medicine in that it involves individualized remedies tailored to a person’s overall state of health and emotional well-being, rather than focusing on the physical symptoms alone.
Key Differences
Herbalists undergo extensive training in plant-based medicine, with a deep focus on the therapeutic uses of plants. Certified Herbalists are equipped with advanced knowledge of plant chemistry, herbal formulations, and the therapeutic actions of various herbs, giving us specialized expertise in using plants to support healing and wellness. While Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) have broader training that includes various natural modalities, such as nutrition, acupuncture, and homeopathy, their focus is more on integrating these approaches with conventional medicine. Homeopathic Practitioners also have a specialized training in homeopathy, which is distinct from herbal medicine.
However, NDs are licensed to diagnose medical conditions and provide treatments that may include prescription medications, whereas Herbalists and Homeopathic Practitioners typically do not have this authority. Herbalists, though highly knowledgeable in plant medicine, may refer clients to NDs for specialized testing or when medications are necessary—often working collaboratively to support the client’s overall health.
Scope: NDs are licensed to diagnose and treat medical conditions, while Herbalists and Homeopathic Practitioners generally work in supportive roles, offering remedies that complement conventional care.
Approach: Herbalists focus primarily on the therapeutic use of plants and holistic practices, NDs take a broader, integrative approach, and Homeopathic Practitioners use individualized homeopathic remedies to stimulate healing.

At Camellia, I’m trained and equipped to offer herbal support for a wide range of health concerns. While my primary focus includes skin, digestive, and hormonal (reproductive) health, my experience extends beyond these areas. I understand that every individual is unique, and that health is complex—so my approach is flexible and personalized to address your specific needs.
Herbal medicine can provide support for a variety of conditions, ranging from chronic issues to everyday wellness. Whether you’re seeking support for stress, immunity, sleep, digestion, or more, plant-based remedies might be a gentle and effective addition to your wellness routine.
If you’re curious about how herbal medicine could support your health, I invite you to contact me or book a 20-minute complimentary discovery consultation. Together, we can explore whether my services and plant-based solutions are right for you.

The timeline for seeing results can vary greatly from person to person and condition to condition. Some may notice improvements in their health or symptoms fairly quickly, while others might experience slower changes. Generally, conditions that are more superficial may show faster results, while long-standing or more complex issues may require more time and a longer-term approach.
Since plant-based remedies work more gently and gradually, they often take longer than conventional treatments. It's important to allow time for your body to respond, as the benefits of herbal medicine build over time. Each person’s body responds uniquely, so while we aim to see positive changes, the pace will depend on your individual needs and health goals.

Following a consultation, I provide clients with a customized health plan that includes more than just a herbal formula. Depending on your unique needs, this plan may also offer recommendations for basic nutrition, lifestyle habits (such as physical routines, sleep strategies, or home care), and social or community connections. In Western Herbal Medicine, Herbalists are trained to assess all aspects of a person’s well-being, including emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health, in relation to the presenting concern.
I believe that true wellness comes from nurturing the whole person, and my approach at Camellia reflects this. By addressing every dimension of your health, I aim to create a plan that supports your overall vitality, not just a specific condition.

While Naturopathic Services are often covered by some extended health care plans, Herbal Medicine Services may not always be directly covered. However, some extended health care providers now offer Personal Health Savings Accounts or Health Savings Accounts that can be used for herbal consultations and custom herbal formulas for certain health conditions.
It’s important to note that coverage varies widely, so clients are encouraged to check with their individual insurance providers to determine the extent of their coverage for herbal medicine services.

Holistic facials at Camellia are designed to nourish your skin with natural, plant-based products, promoting both skin health and overall well-being. Unlike conventional facials, which may rely on synthetic ingredients, our approach integrates plant medicine, self-care techniques, and nurturing touch to support your skin in a balanced and gentle way. The benefits may include improved hydration, better circulation, reduced stress, and enhanced radiance. These facials aim to help you feel confident, radiant, and connected to your skin’s natural beauty.

Our facials are ideal for those looking for a natural approach to skincare. Whether you’re experiencing skin concerns like fine lines, dryness, sensitivity, or stress-related skin issues, or simply seeking a relaxing, rejuvenating experience, a holistic facial can be a wonderful addition to your wellness routine. We customize each treatment based on your skin’s needs and your personal wellness goals, ensuring the best results for every client.

For consultations, it’s helpful to bring a list of any current concerns or medications (including supplements) you’re taking, as well as any skincare products you use. This ensures I can tailor the consultation to your needs. If you’re coming in for a facial, please come makeup-free, if possible, so I can assess your skin’s current condition. If you’re uncertain about anything, don’t hesitate to reach out before your appointment.
-
For the best facial experience, try to avoid using active skincare products (like retinol or exfoliating treatments) for 24-48 hours before your appointment. Arriving with a relaxed mindset is also helpful so you can fully enjoy the experience of restorative touch and nourishment. If you have any questions about your skincare routine leading up to your facial, feel free to reach out!
-
After your facial, it’s important to hydrate well, engage in gentle movement or stretching practice, and allow your skin to breathe. For the next 24 hours, try to avoid direct sun exposure, excessive heat (like saunas), or harsh exfoliating products, as your skin may be more sensitive. I’ll provide you with specific aftercare recommendations based on the products used and your skin’s unique needs. You may also receive personalized suggestions for incorporating skin-nourishing herbs into your daily routine.
-
It’s normal to experience slight redness or mild sensitivity after a facial, especially if lymphatic massage or detoxifying herbs were used. This usually within a few hours to a day. If you experience any discomfort or prolonged irritation, feel free to reach out to me for guidance.
-
Life happens, and I completely understand if you need to reschedule your appointment. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please notify me at least 24 hours in advance so I can offer the time slot to other clients. Cancellations made within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment may incur a small fee. If you need to reschedule or have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and I’ll be happy to accommodate you.

The frequency of facials depends on your skins needs, your wellness goals, and the condition of your skin. For most clients, I recommend starting with a facial once a month to support healthy skin turnover and promote relaxation. Regular facials can help maintain hydration, improve circulation, and address specific concerns such as aging or acne.
If you’re targeting a particular skin concern (like dryness, breakouts, or sensitivity), more frequent facials may be beneficial, especially in the beginning. After a few sessions, we can assess how your skin is responding and adjust the frequency accordingly.
Of course, the most important thing is to listen to your skin and give it the care it needs when it needs it. If you’re unsure about what’s best for you, we can discuss it during your consultation and create a skincare routine that aligns with your lifestyle and goals.
